Power Squadron News

Hello fellow SYC members,
Every fall the Sudbury Power and Sail Squadron holds a get-together at which a speaker shares his or her expertise and experiences.
On Wednesday, October 24, the Haul Out Party will feature  a presentation by Terry Polkinghorne and Anne Phillips who sailed this summer from Killarney to Thunder Bay and back.  This is a journey of mists, storms, scant anchorages and 1000 nautical miles of lee shore.
And that's not all!  There is pizza, beer, and congenial conversation with fellow sailors!
Here is the scoop:
Where: The Taphouse, 1500 Regent Street
When: Wednesday, October 24, Cocktails (well, er... beer) at 6:00 pm; pizza at 6:30 pm, presentation at 7:00.
Tickets: $20 per person.  Includes pizza, tax, and gratuities (but not beer).  Cash bar.
Please reserve your tickets (so we know how much pizza to order) by emailing Marilyn Lane at marvolane@hotmail.com or Rick Cooper at rbcooper@sympatico.ca
or call 705 222 BOAT.
The Sudbury Squadron of CPS holds dry land courses throughout the year in Boating Essentials (PCOC), Navigation, (introductory to advanced), Maritime Radio as well as a variety of special interest courses.  For more information please visit the CPS website at cps-ecp.ca or check with Alain Landry, Defender (yet again) of the Turner Cup at 705 222 BOAT, or Rick Cooper at rbcooper@sympatico.ca
The next series of CPS courses, Beyond Boating Basics and Introduction to Marine Navigation, (Boating 2 and 3) begins in January.
Cheers,
Rick Cooper
Commander
Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons

Power Squadron Courses

9/11/2018

Greetings fellow SYC members,
As you know the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons offer a range of dry-land courses designed to enhance your piloting and boat-handling skills.  These include Boating 1 (Pleasure Craft Operator's Card), Marine Radio, Boating 2-3 (Introduction to Marine Navigation), and this fall's offering, Boating 4 (Near Shore Navigation Level 1).  Among the topics covered in this course are dead reckoning, aids to navigation, anchoring, compass deviation, relative bearings, tides, weather and more!
The course is open to anyone interested in improving their skills as a navigator although it would be helpful to have had experience with Boating 2-3.
If you are interested in increasing your skills as a navigator, or if you are just in need of a refresher, consider registering for Boating 4.  The course gets underway at Living with Lakes on September 18 and runs Tuesday nights until December 4.  More information about fees, course content, as well as registration procedures, can be found here:
http://www.boatingcourses.ca/cities/Sudbury
Don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.
Enjoy the rest of the season!
Rick Cooper
Commander
Sudbury Squadron, CPS
